HUMLA HOSPITAL

In a region constantly battling with mother nature, one man strives to make a differ- ence. Dr.Yeshe Lodoe Lama is the resident doctor at the Citta Hospital Humla and is the hospitals only doctor. Educated at the Institute of Medical Science Banaras Hindu University, India, Dr. Yeshe opened Citta Hospital in 2003, and has until the end of 2010 treated a total of 65,000 people to date.

Located in one of the most rural and poorest areas of Nepal beneath the Himalayas, the Citta Hospital is accessible to most by foot or horseback. Supplied by a small airstrip to the outside world, Citta Hospital relies on scarce resources to aid the 300 plus people who come to queue outside for treatment daily. Poverty stricken, the hospital does not charge patients for treatment and relies on traveling volunteer doc- tors, donations for medical supplies and machinery to treat those in need. Donations are not only used for the medicine and equipment, but for basic needs that are so often taken for granted, such as a roof and walls.

Services and treatments at Citta Hospital consist of Outpatient service, where 300 people wait with anticipation for potential treatments to some of the most common sicknesses and diseases. Citta also has an Inpatients service with 60 beds, reserved for those who have received minor surgery or physical procedures. A 24-hour emergency centre caters to emergency accidents and newly born babies as well as a 24-hour pharmaceutical dispensary with basic medicines.

In an area with little sanitation and an average life expectancy of 45 years, many illnesses are easily treatable. Major illnesses that burden the 28 nearby villages of Humla include tuberculosis, dysentery, arthritis, cataracts, vitamin deficiencies, cholera, ulcers, bronchitis, UTI, Liver cirrhosis, AIDS, cancer, goitre and skin dis- eases.

For each Edifier® product sold, a portion of the sale is donated towards the Humla Citta Hospital where eventually equipment, medicine, concrete and timber can be bought to provide better services to those who have nothing.

You are invited to see how your donation goes towards the Citta Hospital by visiting our News & Press, Humla Hospital page where new photos will be posted to show the development of the Citta hospital and how you have helped someone in need. With your help, Dr. Yeshe is able to treat treatable illnesses and is no longer one man making a difference alone.
